2009/735 Seafood Industry Partners’ Project (SIPP) 2009 retreat: Connecting early career researchers with the Australian seafood industry through meaningful coaching partnerships: Year 1

By Emily Mantilla

The Seafood CRC’s Education and Training Program has a strong end-user focus and needs to ensure "industry ready" graduates enter the Australian seafood industry at the completion of their candidature. To achieve this, Seafood CRC students and other early career scientists, together with industry mentors take part in a program called the SIPP. SIPP usually takes the form of a yearly training "retreat".

The central theme for SIPP 2009, which was held in Adelaide, was how to present research appropriately to an audience and also to ensure the CRC provides adequate support to students through candidature experiences of CRC post doctoral research scientists.

A student review was also conducted. Industry mentors were trained on how to provide leadership to early career scientists (mentoring training). SIPP 2009 also provided an opportunity for participants to learn more about sensory analysis and consumer panels in a seafood context.

A total of 23 early career scientists and five industry mentors participated in SIPP 2009.
