2008/712 Second Generation Tuna Feeds

By David Stone

Commercial in Confidence

Currently Southern Bluefin Tuna (SBT) are captured in South Australian waters and transferred to sea cages off the coast of Port Lincoln in South Australia (SA) where they are fattened using a diet consisting of a range of baitfish. At present the industry is based on the capture of wild sub-adult fish, but methods aimed at the propagation and cultures of SBT are being developed. Feeding baitfish is currently economical and may be suitable for the fattening of wild caught SBT; however, with the pending onset of hatchery produced stock for SBT culture, formulated feeds are desired. This study investigated the suitability of an alternate feed  for fattening sub-adult SBT.
