Program Leaders are responsible for managing the progress, outcomes and collaborative effectiveness of the Centre's five programs.

Our Program Leaders have worked tirelessly throughout the two year bid process and have successfully refined end-user priorities and capacities and have put together project proposals to meet these priorities.

Dr Graham Mair

Graham is the Program Manager for Research Program 1A (Value Chain Profitability) and is responsible for Subprogram 1A which focuses on production innovation.

Graham is an Associate Professor at Flinders University with 18 years of post-doctoral experience in applied research in aquaculture, with a focus on genetic management and improvement and the role of aquaculture in international development.

Prior to this, Graham was a senior scientist for 12 years with a United Kingdom government funded international research program in fish genetics.

Dr Graham Mair


Dr John Carragher

John is Program Leader for Research Program 1B (Value Chain Profitabilities) and he is responsible for Subprogram 1B which focuses on value chain technologies and processing.

John is also Leader of the Seafood Product Quality and Value-Adding Program at the South Australian Research and Development Insitute (Aquatic Sciences) where he is responsible for carrying out research and development that increases returns to South Australian seafood sectors by improving the quality, appearance, shelf life and marketability of wild fishery and aquaculture products.

John has over fifteen years international experience in research on stress and its effects on finfish and, more recently, on molluscs and crustaceans.

Dr John Carragher

Jayne Gallagher (Programs Manager)

Jayne is the Seafood Cooperative Research Centre's Programs Manager and is Program Leader for Research Program 2 (Product Quality and Integrity)

For nearly 20 years, Jayne worked for the Australian Government in Foreign Affairs and Trade and Agricultural portfolios. In this role, she was involved in the Asia-Pacific Economic Forum Fisheries Working Group and other international consultative forums.

She was the first Australian Government Director of Aquaculture and was responsible for facilitating seafood industry development.

Jayne is now the Business Development Manager for Seafood Services Australia Ltd. Here she has been responsible for the development and introduction of the highly successful SeaQual program and other initiatives to help industry understand and meet regulatory and customers expectations for food safety and quality.

Jayne has been President of IAFI - the International Association of Seafood Professionals since 2005.

Jayne Gallagher


Professor Robert (Bob) Gibson

Bob is the Program Leader heading up the supplementary bid for Program 3 (Health Benefits of Seafood).

Bob is currently Professor of Functional Food Science at the University of Adelaide where he is one of Australia's leading nutrition researchers.

Bob heads up a human nutrition research group that is spread over three campuses in Adelaide including the Flinders Medical Centre, the Women's and Children's Hospital and the Waite Institute. He also has a research facility at KK Hospital in Singapore.

If that wasn't impressive enough, Bob has an international reputation for his work on the role of omega 3 fatty acids in human health and coordinates a network of Australia's leading researchers in human nutrition.

Professor Bob Gibson


Professor Chris Carter

Chris is our Program 4 Program Leader (Education and Training) and his focus is on higher education.

With over 20 years working in universities, Chris has supervised around 50 research students, including Masters and Honours students. He has been a member of the Board of Graduate Research, University of Tasmania and is a current member of the Research College Board for the University of Tasmania.

His commitment to PhD research was recently recognised by a 2008 Board of Graduate Research, "Award for Significant Contribution to Graduate Research Supervision and Education".

He currently co-supervises eight PhD students working on various aspects of fish nutrition, physiology and aquaculture and thinks this is one of the most rewarding parts of his work.

Professor Chris Carter


Roy Palmer

Roy is super passionate about industry training and so the Australian Seafood Cooperative Research is proud to have him heading up Program 4 (Education and Training - Industry Skills Development).

As Chairman of the Australian Fish Names Committee, Roy and his team were responsible for getting the Australian Fish Names Standards recognised as an official standard in Australia. This was by no means an easy task.

Roy also has extensive experience in the Australian seafood industry having undertaken positions in exporting, importing and trading, retail, processing and wholesale.

• Is the Director of Tigrey Pty Ltd (trading as Fishy Business)

• Is the Director of The International Association of Fish Inspectors

excellence in the Australian seafood industry.

Roy Palmer

Dr Martin Miller

Martin is an internationally experienced life science executive, who has introduced strategic change and business innovation in a number of different countries. Educated to PhD level, with substantial technical, marketing, international and operational expertise we are lucky that Martin heads up Program 5!
