SARDI is a leading research and development institute delivering innovation to enhance the food, fibre and bioscience industries and living environmental systems in South Australia.
The Food Safety and Innovation program is comprised of a broad range of scientific discipline specialists required by the risk assessment approach. These include public health, veterinary public health, toxicology, microbiology, predictive microbiology, risk modelling, statistics, risk communication, new product development and supply chain analysis. Most projects require inputs from several of these discipline areas requiring a team approach and flexibility in work arrangements.
Located at the Waite University Campus, Urrbrae, the program provides Risk Assessment and Risk Communication services across commodities and on a through-chain (paddock to plate) basis. Researchers commonly utilise production or supply-chain networks provided by the commodity-based divisions of SARDI. Projects commonly address national issues and frequently require collaboration with researchers around Australia.
Duties: The Research Scientist (Virology) is accountable to the Sub-Program Leader, Seafood, for assisting in the development and implementation of a research program which will be focused on the development of novel technologies for detecting foodborne viruses in seafood. The Research Scientist (Virology) will be required to have significant expertise in the generation of antibodies and analysis of foodborne viruses. The Research Scientist will need to plan and manage this research program in collaboration with government agencies, universities and industry sectors, and communicate research outcomes to industry, government, funding organisations and scientific journals. In addition, the incumbent will also be required to provide specialist technical advice on foodborne viruses to government and industry to inform policy development and international standards setting.
Essential Qualifications: The applicant must have a relevant PhD in virology or a related discipline.
Special Conditions: This contract is for a period of 2 years with a possible extension subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funds.
