Conferences

Here are some details of the conferences the Australian Seafood Cooperative Research Centre has been involved in.

Annual Prawn and Barramundi Conference 2007

The Annual Prawn and Barramundi Conference was held between the 25th - 26th July 2007 in Brisbane, Queensland.

The conference was an outstanding success with an excellent assortment of delegates and a wide variety of Australian and international speakers. More than 40 speakers covered subjects ranging from developing an industry-wide environmental plan and the Sydney Fish Market's new direction in meeting consumer demands, to temperature effects on protein synthesis in Barramundi and the potential for triploid induction in Tiger Prawns.

Keynote speakers were US-trained expert in aquaculture nutrition Dr Jacques Gabaudan, from Thailand and UK trained international aquaculture consultant Dr Matthew Briggs.

The Australian Seafood Cooperative Research Centre had an exhibition stand as a means to introducing ourselves to our industry participants in these two sectors and Dr Len Stephens, our Managing Director spoke about the Cooperative Research Centre and our research directions.

World Seafood Congress 2007

During September 2007, Jayne Gallagher (the Australian Seafood CRC's Programs Manager, attendance paid by Seafood Services Australia) and Roy Palmer (Seafood Cooperative Research Centre's Industry Training Education and Program Leader, attendance paid by Tigrey Pty Ltd) attended the World Seafood Congress in Dublin, Ireland where they discovered lots of opportunities for the Centre.

After the welcome speeches by Ms Mary Coughlan T.D (Minister for Agriculture Fisheries and Food for Ireland), Dr Grimur Valdimarsson (FAO) and key speaker, Dr Michael Crawford, Director of The Institute of Brain Chemistry and Human Nutrition in London, set the tone of the Congress with a talk about why the oceans of the world need to be agriculturised.

Another important theme that came through the Congress was that of sustainable development and the focus was on the giant supermarket chain’s desires.

Australians speaking at the event were Dr Steve Kennelly, Mark Boulter (Sydney Fish Market) and Roy Palmer. Other CRC people seen at the Congress were Bryan Skepper (Sydney Fish Market) and Dr Graham Mair (Seafood CRC Program Leader 1A). Jayne, Graham and Roy had meetings with a number of organisations regarding the Seafood CRC and it is expected that collaboration with European Union businesses will be established in 2008.

Seafood Directions 2007

From the 30th October to the 1st November 2007, the Australian Seafood Cooperative Research Centre's staff (Len, Emily and Rebecca) as well as all of our Program Leaders, Board and a large number of participants attended the Seafood Directions Conference in Hobart, Tasmania.

The conference focused around the themes of "climate change, co-management, people in industry, environmental accreditation and changing markets". For the Seafood Cooperative Research Centre, it was a very valuable time to meet a large number of researchers and industry people working within our core and supporting participant organisations. Emily also organised a trade stand, which served as a point for people to come and meet us and find out further information.

A number of our participants also spoke at the conference with those being Matt Muggleton, Development Manager from Southern Rocklobster Limited and Gus Dannoun, Supply Manager, Sydney Fish Market.
