Visiting Existing Seriola Seacage Operations in Japan

• Project Number – 2011/759
• Start Date – 15th November 2011
• End Date – 1st December 2011
• Principal Investigators – Rowan Kleindienst and Erica Starling
• CRC Participant End User – Western Australian Fishing Industry Council and Clean Seas Tuna

About the Project

Rowan and Erica from Indian Ocean Fresh Pty Ltd will visit a Seriola sp seacage operation in southern Japan during November 2011. Japanese Amberjack (Seriola quinqueradiata) farming has been developed successfully on a commercial scale in Japan and there are likely to be similarities in production issues especially in light of similar water temperatures in southern Japan with Western Australia.
As Indian Ocean Fresh is a newly emerging Yellowtail Kingfish producer in Western Australia, this bursary will allow Erica and Rowan to view much larger scale Yellowtail farms and understand how they are managed and how operations are conducted. Specific areas of interest for Erica and Rowan include growth rates and nutritional issues, fish health issues and disease management, parasite management and harvesting practices.

Study Tour of Marine Harvest Operations, Scotland

• Project Number – 2011/710
• Start Date – 9th May 2011
• End Date – 20th May 2011
• Principal Investigator – Tony Octoman and Marcus Stehr
• CRC Participant End User – Clean Seas Tuna

About the Project

This bursary's activity will take the form of a study based tour of Marine Harvest's (MH) marine operations in Scotland to visit the Fort William salmon operation. The intention of the visit is to gather and exchange knowledge in feed management, net management including antifouling, net changing and in situ net cleaning and fish health management (peroxide bathing techniques including well boat and tarpaulin treatments, vaccine development and seal management). Marcus and Tony will also explore R&D farm set up and management, fallowing and stock rotation planning and harvest processes.

Fish Breeders Round Table Meeting, Norway

Completed Project

• Project Number – 2011/709
• Start Date – 31st August 2011
• End Date – 13th September 2011
• Principal Investigator – Dr Brad Evans
• CRC Participant End User – Tasmanian Salmonid Growers Association

About the Project

Dr Evans was awarded an industry bursary to attend the Fish Breeders' Round Table which is an international forum that is held every four years in Norway, where knowledge and experience is exchanged between fish breeding researchers and those involved in applied genetic improvement work on a commercial basis.

Through this activity, Dr Evans was able to improve knowledge of alternate approaches to breeding problems and to understand the commercial structure of breeding companies, hatcheries and on-growers in other parts of the world. He also gave an international presentation of the current status of the Tasmanian Atlantic Salmon Selective Breeding Program and obtained feedback from world leaders on the current strategies for genetic improvement in Tasmanian Atlantic Salmon. Dr Evans was also able to spend time in the offices and field stations of AquGen and Marine Harvest in Norway, and Landcatch Natural Selection in Scotland.
A copy of the bursary report is available from the CRC Bookshop
